University of Dhaka, WorldFish, and Swiss Agency for Development & Cooperation (SDC) have observed together the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR2012) on October 13 by co-hosting a national rally and a seminar at University of Dhaka. Dr. Craig A. Meisnar, Director –Bangladesh and South Asia, WorldFish, Prof. Dr. Nasreen Ahmed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Dhaka University, Mr. Matthias Anderegg graced the occasion as Special Guests. Dr. Md. Abdur Rob, Chairman, Department of Geography & Environment, University of Dhaka chaired the event.Prof. Dr. A.Q.M Mahbub, Course Coordinator of MS in Disaster Management program of University of Dhaka presented the keynote paper on the theme ‘Women & Girls - The inVisible Force of Resilience’. Mr. Kevin Thomas Kamp- Deputy Director –Bangladesh and South Asia, WorldFish presented how worldfish is contributing Bangladesh in Improving Gender Equity and Combating Disaster Risks reduction.

In his technical presentation Mr. Kevin shows how a transformative gender approach can eventually contribute in making of a disaster resilient society. He shared the research works of WorldFish that linked to gender equity and disaster.Dr. Mahbub, Prof Rosie emphasized on the importance of the change of traditional perception towards women in bangladesh. Dr. Craig discussed about the importance of fisheries and aquaculture in improving productivity, increasing income which eventually contribute in poverty reduction and capacity of combating disaster and climate change.
