Engaging local authorities to build safer communities

13:15 Dec 5 2012 Lima Peru

Description
On International Day Disaster Reduction, Estrategia brought together 50 community members and the mayor of an earthquake affected city to sign a formal agreement to improve living conditions. The community has lobbied the mayor of Chocos, Macedonio Aburto Gutierrez, to sign and enforce laws that allow for the demolition of collapsed homes in the area, which he formally agreed to do. In addition, the day marked the launch of Peru’s first resilient rural community in the High Andes. An MOU was signed between the mayor and Estrategia to allow women to monitor the progress of and implementation of the MOU.

Estrategia's partnership dialogue highlights the importance of investing in women's leadership and organizing. The formal agreement marks on step in an effective partnership
